Rei has no audio once modded (Arch Linux)

Bug Information

Describe the bug: All audio is muted once modded, apart from OP videos.

To reproduce: Install 07thmod to a Mangagamer copy via the tool, run the game.

Expected behavior: It should have sound effects, voice and music like 1-8, and 10

I installed the patch: Using the installer, and overwriting manually

I bought the game at: Mangagamer (fresh download)

My operating system is: Arch Linux based (EndeavourOS) running KDE

State anything "special" about your computer's setup: Nothing in particular (gaming PC?)

All audio works fine prior to modding.

We've had this issue before, but I think it was mainly on Windows. It usually happens if you're using some special "audio" related software that came with your headset like "Razer Synapse", or just you using a usb or bluetooth headset, but I'm not sure how much that applies on Linux.

1. Please have a look at the below FAQs, and see if anything applies to you:

   • Are you using a bluetooth or USB headset?

2. Would it be possible for you to do another install of the unmodded game on your computer (somewhere else on your computer), just to double check it is the mod causing the issue? This would also be useful for A/B testing. And then I could ask you to manually apply parts of the mod, to see what part is breaking it.

3. Regarding "It should have sound effects, voice and music like 1-8, and 10", please try booting up chapter 8 now to check if sound works (like, I know it worked before, but it's not clear if you booted it up after the sound broke, or if you're just saying it works from memory). If you're sure you've already tested it after the sound broke, then don't worry about re-testing it.

4. If this issue is caused by the mod, it would probably be either the UI file (HigurashiEp09_Data\sharedassets0.assets) or the DLL (HigurashiEp09_Data\Managed\Assembly-CSharp.dll).

   • For the sharedassets0.assets, there should be a sharedassets0.assets.backup. You can try to revert to see if it fixes the audio. The game should run fine even with the unmodded sharedassets, just some UI will look funny and the options menu sliders will be labelled incorrectly.

   • For the DLL, I can't remember if there is a backup, but that one is harder to revert because the modded game requires it to run. Please try the above items first, but maybe I can rig something up just for the purpose of testing.

2. I have an unmodded copy, the sound still works.
3. Same for chapter 8, still good.
4. And using old shared assets.

As for my audio device, it's a set of 3.5mm headphones through a DAC - I tried my directly connected speakers just in case with no change.

Would the game logs give any info? If so where can they be found?

Ah, I didn't think about the game logs.

While in-game, press F10, then click "Troubleshooting", and under "Save Files and Log Files" click "Show output_log.txt / Player.log"

Otherwise I think it is at ~/.config/unity3d/MangaGamer/ on Linux. For example ~/.config/unity3d/MangaGamer/Higurashi When They Cry - Ch.5 Meakashi/Player.log (for chapter 5) for chapter 5. Although Ch.9 might have a different pattern or be in a different folder...

Please upload here and I'll see if I can spot any errors.

To confirm whether it's the DLL breaking it:

On your unmodded copy, make a backup of the unmodded install first.

Then, can you try only applying this file? https://github.com/07th-mod/higurashi-rei/releases/download/v1.5.1/Rei.Voice.and.Graphics.Patch.zip

It contains a HigurashiEp09_Data, which you should merge with the same HigurashiEp09_Data folder in your unmodded install.

Then launch the game, and tell me if it breaks your audio. Don't worry about the images won't load properly etc, but I think on the Main Menu, the cicada sound loop should play, and the "click" sfx when you press a button should work.

Also for the comment "4. And using old shared assets", do you mean the audio works, or doesn't work with the old shared assets, but everything else modded?

Ah woops, for 4. I meant audio still didn't work on the modded copy after swapping to the old file.
I'll get back to you on the logs and DLL test a bit later today.

Yes it looks like the patch file does break the audio, indicating it being the DLL.

I found the log, it had one error repeating for most of the log:

hmmm... earlier I was looking at your game path, and was like, there's no way the . in the game path is breaking it...but then I saw this https://forums.dfworkshop.net/viewtopic.php?t=5553 which implies it might be the engine or our mod not handling paths correctly. Although not sure why the unmodded game would be OK.

Currently your install is at /home/REDACTED/Games/VN/When They Cry/01. Higurashi/HigurashiEp09/HigurashiEp09_Data.

• Can you move the game folder to home/REDACTED/HigurashiEp09, then see if it fixes it? In case the . or something else in the path is breaking it
• Can you try playing some of the BGM in the BGM folder, to make sure the files on disk are OK.

I'll get back to you later, I may need to make a DLL which prints out what audio file the game is trying to play.

The bgm itself runs, and having it directly in my home directory seems to fix it.
I did some further testing and moved it up directory levels - it starts working with the HigurashiEp09 folder at home/[redacted]/Games/VN/ and breaks at /When They Cry/ and beyond.
So it seems to work 2 directory levels beyond /home/user/

Nevermind, it's the spaces in directories causing the issues (made WhenTheyCry/01.Higurashi/ to test.

Hmm, if it's something that simple it would be weird if I couldn't reproduce it on my end. So I'll try that if I have time, and make a note in the wiki for the time being.

If you play ch.10, let me know if it has the same issue.

Also, please leave this issue open, as not supporting spaces in the game path is really bad lol. Worst comes to worst I can add a check/warning when you boot the game on Linux, that there are no spaces in the game path (if the root cause can't be found)

I have played chapter 10 and the start of both unlocked arcs (until I hear BGM, SFX and speaking) with no issues there either, so it does seem specific to 09/Rei specific.
