Add ToC in mardown

I have marddown content files that I would like to auto generate a Table of Contents for. The catch is that I'd like us to be able to include the ToC anywhere we specify in the markdown content file. Is that possible?

Example:

src/blog/posts/test.md

---
title: Test Post
description: Let's test stuff!
---

## Heading 1

This is the content for the first heading.

{% include toc.njk %}
^This is where we'd want to include the ToC.

I get we can add a ToC to a template that renders the markdown, but that would restrict us to having the ToC always be in the same spot. The include may not be the right approach, but is there a way to add shortcodes or filters to a markdown/content file that can consume the content of that file?

I use a plugin to do this and can place the TOC wherever I want. I covered it in this blog post.
