Dear Maintainers,

I propose implementing third-party authentication in the backend of Debate AI to enhance user experience and security by integrating widely used OAuth providers like Google or GitHub. This approach will simplify user onboarding and leverage Go’s performance and reliability for robust implementation.


Why Use Third-Party Authentication?

  1. Enhanced User Experience

    • Allows users to log in with their existing accounts, providing a seamless and familiar experience.
  2. Increased Security

    • Utilizes trusted providers for authentication, reducing risks associated with handling sensitive data directly.
  3. Scalability

    • Easily extendable to include additional providers as needed in the future.
  4. Efficiency for Developers

    • Reduces time spent on developing and maintaining custom authentication systems.

Proposed Scope of Work

  1. OAuth 2.0 Integration

    • Integrate authentication with providers such as Google and GitHub.
    • Use libraries like golang.org/x/oauth2 or gorilla/sessions for managing OAuth workflows.
  2. Endpoints for Authentication

    • Implement routes such as:
      • /auth/<provider>: Redirects users to the provider's OAuth login.
      • /auth/<provider>/callback: Handles the provider's response and completes authentication.
  3. Session Management

    • Use JWT or secure sessions to manage user authentication state.
  4. Database Integration

    • Create a schema to store user details (e.g., provider ID, email, profile info).
    • Ensure the implementation works with the database of the maintainer’s choice.
  5. Frontend API Support

    • Provide clear API documentation for the frontend team to integrate login buttons and workflows.

Technical Stack

  • Backend Framework: Go
  • Authentication Libraries:
    • golang.org/x/oauth2 for OAuth 2.0 integration.
    • gorilla/mux or echo for routing and session management.
  • Database: Flexible to the maintainer’s choice.
  • Security Practices: Enforce HTTPS, use secure cookies, and encrypt JWT tokens.

Workflow for Third-Party Login

  1. Login Button: User clicks a third-party login button on the frontend.
  2. Redirect to Provider: Backend redirects the user to the provider’s OAuth login page.
  3. Callback Handling: Backend receives the provider’s token and fetches user details.
  4. User Creation/Lookup: Store new user data or update existing records in the database.
  5. Token Issuance: Backend generates a secure token for session management.

Deliverables

  1. Fully functional third-party authentication backend integrated with Google and/or GitHub.
  2. Secure user data handling with support for session or token-based management.
  3. Documentation for frontend API integration and future provider extensions.
  4. Test cases to ensure the functionality and security of the authentication flow.

If assigned this issue, I will:

  • Implement OAuth 2.0 with selected providers using Go.
  • Ensure secure and scalable implementation that adheres to best practices.
  • Provide detailed API documentation and collaborate with the frontend team for integration.
