[question] What photo edit/paint software actually supports EXR? #2135

Hi Academy Software Foundation,

Sorry for posting a question into the issue section, but I do hope you could help me with this.
I really like the EXR format (especially multi layer) te render to from Blender, but having several paint softwares and graphical editors no editor seem to support it, or the support is non-functioning (buggy). I'm on Windows.

For instance:

  • Krita supports it but I experienced issues importing multi layer EXR
  • Affinity Photo supports it but it contains bugs making it impossible to export the multi layer as supposed to, making import usesless too. And they don't fix it and stopped responding to the issue report. Also they have a track record of not fixing issues for years, so that's a no go zone.
  • Clip studio Paint EX does not support it
  • Sketchbook Pro does not support it
  • As far as I can see online also the latest software inside Corel Draw 2025 Suite doesn't support it

The only software that seemingly supports it, and even then still needs a plugin as I understand it, is Photoshop. But I got rid of Adobe for years and am not planning to go back for the obvious reasons.

I don't get it. Especially knowing that EXR is an open format, and it being the only real multilayer format used in 3d software that I know of. Why is there no support? It can't be that only one single plugin for Photoshop actually supports EXR, right?

What edit tools / paint software is out there that we can use to actually retouch/paint on (multi layer) EXR files?
(and hopefully the response is not something like Gimp... as I mean actual intuitive good working (professional) tools. Hope I don't offend anyone with that)

Thanks in advance,

Maarten
