Improve documentation around thread safety and cache handling

We have had feedback on this from multiple groups. It would be helpful for there to be clearer guidance and documentation around the cache object, specifically its thread safety. We could perhaps add a dedicated section to the docs on thread safety, so that it is more discoverable for users who want information on the subject.
