Gain doesnt change regardless of using AUTO Gain or not...

As above, I cant figure out how autogain works. When I see MaxAutoGain it implies that this is the MAX it will go to but also go to lower values as needed. I see it always ramp up to the max and in many cases overexposes the image. The autoexposure moves in each exposure but the gain remains the same after initially ramping up and increasing with each exposure.
For example I have a max autoexposure of 12000ms. I have a maxgain of 225. Depending on conditions the time of the exposure will move up and down. Gain on the other hand initially ramps up from a lower number and stays at the maxgain value forever.

Shouldnt gain move too??

What brand camera?
The RPi autoexposure/ autogain algorithm that we created works well and increases the exposure before the gain.
For ZWO cameras we implemented the autoexposure algorithm but use the ZWO autogain algorithm, whatever that is. We suggest using manual gain for ZWO since the ZWO autogain tends to conflict with our autoexposure, as you have seen.

I have a similar problem. I would like to have a constant exposure time (of 20 s) with shortest possible intervals (to get as much meteors as possible). I have Autogain on, however, when there is a thin veil of clouds or fog the image is always way too bright. Turning Autogain on (or off) doesn't affect the image brightness at all. The Gain value is always constant and exactly the value of the GAIN setting.
I have a ZWO ASI 174MM and the latest Allsky version.
