IMX708 RPi Module 3 detected but then "No Camera Found"?

I had been running a 2023 version with the IMX708 camera, but I had trouble with the module handler unchecking the overlay module on its own. I just updated to the latest, and I got a "no camera found" error.

Upon reboot, I reran the install.sh and see on screen, Found RPi Module 3 (imx708). But then the installation fails with the same "no camera found" error.

In allsky/config, there's a file called connected_cameras.txt, and it says, "RPi 0 imx708"

What's going on?

You upgraded to v2024.12.06_05, right? or _04 ?

Either way, please follow the instructions on the WebUI's "Getting Support" page and then upload the support file it creates.

Hi Eric. Without being able to install allsky, there is no webui page to go to. I cannot install allsky because something got broken. I get this: ERROR: Unable to process settings file '/home/pi/allsky/config/settings.json'. File /home/pi/allsky/config/settings.json not found!

So, I copied the missing file from the old working installation, and I was at least able to bring up the webui. But what a complete mess! I still cannot run any support. Take a look:

The installation got hosed somehow, possibly the "git clone" didn't work right or possibly disk corruption.
Please save the current corrupted Allsky then start over:

sudo systemctl stop allsky
cd ~/allsky
./install.sh --restore  # to restore anything the installation moved from allsky-OLD to allsky
cd ..
mv allsky allsky-BAD
# run the "git clone..." command and make sure it completes successfully 
cd allsky 
./install.sh

Thanks Eric. That is very strange. It made it all the way through the install this time, but it won't start due to a memory issue: [0:06:57.797689347] [2469] ERROR V4L2 v4l2_videodevice.cpp:1241 /dev/video0[13:cap]: Unable to request 1 buffers: Cannot allocate memory
ERROR: *** failed to allocate capture buffers ***

I know the Pi Zero 2W has only 512MB, but I'm only interested in image capture like it was doing before.

I have attempted to use the Getting Support in the webui, but when I attempt to download the generated file, it hangs. Where is this generated file located so I can manually download it for attaching?

@khobar95, the support logs are in ~/allsky/html/support. Please upload it.
Glad it worked this time - it's likely something got corrupted the first time. If you notice other files getting corrupted or disappearing it probably means your SD card is failing.

Someone else reported their downloads also hang. It works for me and other people so it may be something in your (and his) environment. What's in /var/log/lighttpd/error.log?
Would you please go to the "Getting Support" page then press F12 and in the right side, go to the "Console" tab. Then press SHIFT-F5 to force a refresh, then try the download again. Assuming it hangs, is there anything in the "Console" tab?

I assume the 2023 version worked fine?
Is it still in ~/allsky-OLD ? If so, try running cd ~/allsky; ./install.sh --restore to revert back to the 2023 version so see if the ERROR goes away.

Hi Eric,

Working on your suggestions of restoring the old working module.

I wonder if the failing SD card is the key. I say this because the old "working" model, the module overlay that handles the time, date, exposure, etc. kept resetting to unchecked. No idea if that means anything, but I figured I'd mention it.

I did a tail of /var/log/lighttpd/error.log it it's this repeating: 2025-07-23 09:44:43: mod_fastcgi.c.487) FastCGI-stderr:PHP Notice: A non well formed numeric value encountered in /home/pi/allsky/html/includes/functions.php on line 1126

So, I did the restore, but something is again broken. the end of dmesg shows this repeating: 63.927045] cma: cma_alloc: linux,cma: alloc failed, req-size: 3645 pages, ret: -12
[ 63.927076] unicam 3f801000.csi: dma alloc of size 14929920 failed

I'll try a different sd card

Please run cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp and let me know what it returns.
That's what is causing the "A non well formed numeric value encountered in..." messages.

I get something like 49600. I assume yours isn't returning a number, at least it didn't when that message was displayed.

The cma_alloc thing is a Linux problem, not Allsky. It definitely could be a failing SD card, or it could be that Linux somehow got corrupted.

Ignoring those messages, does everything seem to be working?
