ALLSKY 2025.xx.xx – release timeline and first impressions

Hello,

I would like to ask approximately when the new version ALLSKY 2025.xx.xx will be released. I saw that it might be on May 1, 2026, but I assume that could still change.

For now, I don’t want to deploy the beta version on my ALLSKY, which is currently running version v2024.12.06_05. I would prefer to wait for the official release so I can back up my Pi4 and then migrate everything to Pi5.

I am currently testing it on Pi5, and honestly it looks very good. There are many new features that caught my attention, especially the backup functionality, Mask Image, and similar improvements.

It might also be a good idea to add some kind of donation/payment icon in the system. The development and time spent programming are truly invaluable.

There is a "Donate" button on the main Allsky GitHub page that sends money to Thomas, who is no longer working on this project. He started Allsky, so feel free to "send him a cup of coffee".
To be honest though, what we'd really like is more help testing (as you are doing with v2025.xx.xx) and / or developing.

A few weeks ago, we thought the new release would be ready May 1, but that's not going to happen. Sometime later in May is reasonable, though.

In lieu of coffee, I'm happy to do some testing over the next few months. I just received a grant to build a bunch of these for MA State Parks to measure light pollution. It looks like we're on Trixie now for the OS? I'll be doing fresh installs this time as upgrade seems to never quite work on RPi's.

Q: Is there a specific allsky build I should use to help test the next/current release? (note, using RPi 4 8GB + HQ cam)

No specific build- anything you have will work
Allsky works fine with Trixie.

The Raspberry team updated Trixie a couple weeks ago to often prompt for a password when running "sudo". I put a fix in v2025.xx.xx today to have install.sh set things up so it stops doing that.

Honestly, I can barely manage my native language. Without DeepL, I probably wouldn’t be able to write anything. However, if I come across any bugs, I will definitely report them.

For now, it seems to me that the editor window is small. It would be good to adjust it better to the window size. But this is only an aesthetic issue and will likely be refined over time.

It might be a good idea to show the information text when hovering over the (i) icon. Currently, it only appears after clicking with the mouse.

While backing up, I noticed that the backup times don’t match.

I agree it would be nice if the Settings -> Editor window could be as tall as the browser window.
Ditto for the System -> Logs viewer.

I can't speak for @Alex-developer, although I suspect he'll agree, I would rather have Allsky help than money.

I encountered an error (ERROR), but I’m not sure if it’s on my side. I created a script using AI to read data from a weather station that I have installed in my garden. I know there are modules available for collecting data from weather stations, but this solution suits me better.

I am also attaching the log. It includes the created script named allsky_metostanice_server.py. However, I don’t think this script is causing the issue, although I could be mistaken.

I presume you are using an Ecowitt gateway to post the data to the server?

I really would use the allsky_temp (Environment) module as it can read data from either the Ecowitt API or from a local gateway

There are a few issues going on here.

• Do not put the script in the modules folder unless its a valid Allsky module, this code isnt
• I suspect the error is in the script but its hard to tell.

so

• Move the script outside of the module folder
• Remove the try catch and run the code standalone
• Let the gateway post data to it and see if any errors are generated

Opravdu bych použil modul allsky_temp (Environment), protože dokáže číst data buď z Ecowitt API, nebo z lokální brány.

I have a suggestion to change the text color in Allsky Settings in dark mode. Currently, it is set to -WebUI-setting-color: #5454e9;, but this color -WebUI-setting-color: #3b82f6; would fit better. It seems to me that the original color is quite faint. It could also be used for light mode, but I’ll leave that up to you. It might just be that my monitor displays the colors differently.

I also noticed that in the Overlay Editor settings there is a close “X” icon, but it is not visible in dark mode (see image).

• I have changed the settings colour
• I have removed the 'X' from the module manger as its not needed
• I have changed the red used for experimental to make it lighter

I just updated allsky 2025 from v.2024.
Everything went smoothly, I just had to recreate the folder /allsky/config/overlay/extra for my custom variables to work.
The graph part seems very promising!
My main concern is the image navigation in the WebUI. It felt way snappier in the previous version. You could load the preview of the whole day in seconds, and using arrows to previous/next image was faster. Also the animation between the image is totally unnecessary IMO and makes the reading of subtle changes a lot harder. Underneath title under every image is also unnecessary since most people print this data into the image, and use a lot of screen space.

I downgraded to v.2024 real quick to show the difference. The thumbnail are instantaneous, the initial loading of a specific image is longer, but once it's loaded, it's really responsive and useful to quickly spot meteors.

I have made a change to the thumbnail browsing to make it faster.

The initial load uses endless navigation to load the images as its fine for some people, you and I both found the old way to be fine, but a lot of users on slower devices really struggled with the loading.

There was also a problem with the previous system that would cause images ot fail to load as it was trying to load way too many images at the same time.

I would be interested to know which camera and Pi you are using, its hard to tell from the images

Thats interesting to see, I'll did out my 120 and give it a try. I am using a 767 and get zero lag when loading.

I never see any lag on my systems on my home network where everything is on the LAN.
