Creating a translation

I'd like to work on a French translation for AssetTracker. I notice RT uses Launchpad for that. I tried using POEdit, but couldn't get the underlying xgettext to extract the strings from source, as it kept complaining about invalid string interpolation. How could I get a template PO file to work on?
