Description
Modal verbs do not inflect but are in the position where an inflected verb would be. The verb following them in a sentence cannot be inflected. Not for tense, person, or number.
Modal verbs are: can, could, shall, should, will, would
✅ can go, could go, shall go, should go, will go, would go
❌ can went, could goes, shall going, should am, will is, would are
I think this applies to other auxiliary verbs too, but those are usually inflected. Needs more thought/observation
✅ did go
❌ did went
Examples
- it will makes the wasm modules unshakeable → it will make the wasm modules unshakeable
Potential false positives
- "can" is also a noun: "Did you see where that can went?"
- "will" is also a noun but it's harder to think of conflicts.
