Alert Routing Matrix Assignment - Testing & Completion Guide

Assignment Summary

#384 [Backend] Alert routing matrix: severity-aware paging tiers in alertmanager config

This assignment implements a complete severity-aware alert routing matrix for the Credence Backend monitoring infrastructure.

What Has Been Implemented

1. ✅ AlertManager Configuration

File: monitoring/prometheus/alertmanager.yml

  • Routing Matrix: Environment-aware (prod, staging, dev) with severity-based escalation (SEV1, SEV2, SEV3)

  • SEV1 (Page-Now) Rules:

    • Trust score 5xx error rate violations → PagerDuty
    • Settlement drift → PagerDuty + Finance team Slack
    • Database/Redis outages → PagerDuty
    • Group wait: 5 seconds for immediate escalation
  • SEV2 (High Priority Ticket):

    • Latency SLO violations
    • Verification failures
    • Pool saturation
    • Group wait: 2 minutes (batch related alerts)
  • SEV3 (Low Priority Ticket):

    • Export queue depth
    • Slow health checks
    • Worker pool concerns
    • Group wait: 5-10 minutes (batch for batch processing)
  • Inhibition Rules: SEV1 fires → suppress SEV2/SEV3 for same service

  • Security: All credentials reference environment variables (${ALERTMANAGER_SLACK_WEBHOOK}, etc.)

2. ✅ Updated Alert Rules

File: monitoring/prometheus/alerts.yml

All 13 alerts now include:

  • Severity Labels: SEV1, SEV2, or SEV3
  • Service Labels: trust-score, database, cache, api-platform, verification, etc.
  • Team Labels: platform, infrastructure, finance
  • Runbook URLs: Links to documentation (https://docs.credence.org/runbooks/...)

Severity Mapping:

  • SEV1: SuccessRateSLOViolation, ErrorBudgetBurnRateHigh, DatabaseDown, RedisDown
  • SEV2: HighP99Latency, EndpointLatencySLOViolation, HighBulkVerificationFailureRate, PgPoolSaturation, LowVerificationRate
  • SEV3: HighLatency, SlowHealthCheck, PgWorkerPoolSaturation

3. ✅ Documentation

File: docs/alert-routing.md

Comprehensive 400+ line guide including:

  • Severity level definitions and response times
  • On-call rotation expectations by team
  • Routing matrix for all environments
  • Edge case handling (flapping, maintenance windows, dependency outages)
  • Receiver configuration and security best practices
  • Runbook URL patterns

✅ AlertManager has production, staging, dev receivers
✅ AlertManager has inhibition rules
✅ Environment variables used instead of hardcoded secrets
✅ Alert names follow correct naming patterns

✅ No hardcoded secrets (only ${VARIABLE} references)
✅ Security warnings in docs about secret handling
