In Preferences | General | Image loading and caching, there is an option to "Preload next image."
When working quickly to rate many images, though, it's easily possible to under-run the cache if only the next image gets loaded.
It should therefore be possible to have Geeqie pre-load every image in the folder. See also #2169, #504, #248
#491 is similar but asking for the ability to pre-load a specified number of images.
