ESPhome Security Issue, Compile Error "Secret 'wifi_qr' not defined"

Dear all,
dear @BigBobbas ,

I read that versions of ESPhome before 8.1 have a massive security issue, see https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2025-57808

This reminded me of doing an update of the firmware. I just downloaded the dev version, and ESPhome 8.2 . On install, I immediately receive an error "Secret 'wifi_qr' not defined".

What am I doing wrong?

Just add a line in your secrets.yaml like:

wifi_qr: "your_password"

What is the purpose of this? Should it be the Wifi password of my network or something different?

Welcome.. It can be used to generate a QR code for your network. But anything in there works at the moment.

you can use it to display for example a qr code for a guest wifi
the format for secrets to create a useable qr code

wifi_qr: "WIFI:T:WPA;S:YOUR_SSID;P:YOUR_PASSWORD;;"

obviously replacing ssid and password with yours
