What happened?

Some apps are not shown in multiple menus.

Description

In multiple menus, some apps are not shown. It is possible though to successfully install them by searching them. If they are absent in their specific menu, they're also missing in the "All Apps" menu. Following the softwaretestinghelp.com guideline, I'd mark this as a "Major" bug, since new users that do not know other apps will not be able to use the "hidden" ones (I managed to overcome this bug because I knew the names of the apps I wanted to install, and therefore I searched them). Also, in Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm (which I recently switched from, migrating to Ubuntu) it worked fine the last time I used it (although the problem could be dependent entirely from Pi Apps and not from the OS, but I do not think so). @Stanko33 please use the latest LTS release of ubuntu, ubuntu noble 24.04 if you want to use ubuntu. we don't support the interim releases

I've notified the ubuntu developers not to use a highly broken version of YAD (the GUI library we use) a few weeks ago now but currently have no response from them. This is probably a bug with it.

In any case, if Ubuntu doesn't get on fixing this soon we will probably be forced to bundle a prebuild of YAD if the system version is found to be too new (greater than 0.40.0). CC @Botspot

turns out its Ubuntu's uutils RUST coreutils replacement that causes the issue. The sort command errors out.

Its stuff like this that annoys me with ubuntu....

If anyone wants to dig into which commands are failing in the preload script which result in these "missing" apps, be my guest. I will try to figure it out but no guarantees. It is unacceptable that critical system libraries are being messed with without intensive testing and time in an official release of ubuntu by DEFAULT. Users don't expect that the underlying coreutils are broken on their system out of the box.

This is fixed now in pi-apps by forcing the use of gnu coreutils if uutils is installed. I am leaving this bug open until ubuntu/upstream fixes the bugs in uutils so that it can actually be used.

Just update pi-apps through the updater. It will handle the rest.
