Change color not so much, but you can affect the positions of the instances with any kind of distance based approach. The object falloff node could be adjust to just target a single closest base by adjusting the values.

I'm working on revamping a bunch of the DNA stuff which will allow for flipping of bases, but the current setup you could use the "rotate instances" node. |
