ESC doesn't return me to menu when I opened a submenu via shortcut

Describe the bug:
DISCLAIMER: I've reported this issue before already, but since it has been months /two stables and several betas ago I'm reporting it again.

When I press the shortcut "F" (for files) to go to the files-menu on my Cardputer, I cannot leave the menu by pressing "ESC" like I can do in the files menu when I opened it by navigating there via the main menu.

Steps To Reproduce:

1. Open the files menu via shortcut (F).
2. Press ESC
3. Nothing visible happens
   (4. Additional step: Try navigating after the "ESC" press and some weird overlay sub-menu pops up on top of the files menu)

Expected behavior:
Files should behave like normal, and I should be able to exit it by pressing "ESC" no matter whether I opened it via shortcut or via navigating the GUI

Actual behavior:
It doesn't exit on "ESC" press and additionally causes a GUI bug when I press any navigation button after the ESC press.

Additional context / logs:
The GUI bug I'm talking about is about is a small plain text version of the files-menu, overlaying the real files menu.
