Relational SQL database: updating a linked field by picking data in a modal

I have 2 tables Names and Pets. Both tables have an ID column. The Names table also has a field for a ID_Pet (n:1).

Now I want to display table Names.
When the user clicks on the ID_Pet field, a modal should open and display all available Pets in the Pets table.
When the user clicks a Pet, the ID_Pet field in the Names should update with the ID of the selected Pet.

How far did I get?
I can display the data, open the modal.
The form-field for the ID_Pet field in the Names table cannot be updated from within the modal that displays the Pets data.
So I saved the ID of the selected pet in a state variable.

But how to proceed? How can I update the ID_Pet field in the Names Form when a pet is clicked in the modal?
The "on close"-action of the modal also cannot access fields in the Names-form.
