Infra request for FIM experiments #369

@brodiealexander

Description

@brodiealexander

1. Requester Information:
This should include the name and contact information of the person making the request.

  • PI's Full Name: James Halgren/Steve Burian [transition in progress]
  • PI's Affiliated Institute: UA
  • PI's Affiliated Email Address: jshalgren/sburian @ua.edu

2. Project Information:
Provide the CIROH project name associated with this research work along with a brief description of the project and its goals. This can help the infrastructure team understand the context and purpose of the requested resources. Please highlight how this project will be benefit from and/or provide benefit to other resources on the shared infrastructure.

Community Hydrofabric

This subset of the project aims to improve computational efficiency and quality of Flood Inundation Maps and associated intermediate products. The particular software I plan to deploy will work intermittently as-needed to create Flood Inundation "libraries" which can be used to look up what areas should be flooded when a given stream reach is at a given gage height. The project will benefit from the large amounts of RAM on the NextStream nodes, as RAM is currently the limiting factor for parallelization. The project could benefit the shared infrastructure by helping realize gains in computational efficiency for library creation as well as by making these libraries available for FIM workflows.

3. Project Description:
If your project involves developing software or scripts, briefly describe the software you plan to develop.

We will develop and test a Rust port of the FLDPLN model from KU. Rust will benefit the project by allowing for lower memory consumption and more efficient compute use as compared to the MATLAB version.

4. Resource Requirements:
Specify the compute, storage, and network resources needed for the project. Be as specific as possible about the number of resources required, and any specific configurations or capabilities needed. This information will help the infrastructure team determine the appropriate resources to allocate.

We need as much RAM as we can get. 512 GB is the minimum, but 1024 GB or higher is preferred. 4 TB of storage is our minimum but 8 TB or higher is preferred. Some form of ability to import and export large quantities of data is also required.

Please note that we only need this resource intermittently.

Options:

  1. HPC or VM
    VM

  2. vCPU
    16-64

  3. Memory

= 1024 GB [512 GB minimum]

  1. Disk Space

= 8 TB [4 TB minimum]

  1. Pantarhei/NSF ACCESS Allocation (specify one)

NextStream

5. Working Group

Working Group 1/2/3/4 (select one): FIM

6. Timeline

Project start date: Immediate

Project end date: Spring 2026 or earlier

In addition, please indicate the expected timeline for the project and when the resources will be needed. This information can help the infrastructure team plan and allocate resources accordingly.

Resources will be needed intermittently when large FIM libraries are required to be computed as well as for processing of related large datasets.

7. Security and Compliance Requirements:
If there are any specific security or compliance requirements for the project, please state them clearly below. This will help ensure that the necessary security measures are in place for the project.

N/A

8. Approval:
Indicate the necessary approval processes or sign-offs required for the request.

Contact James Halgren or Steve Burian for more info. I'm not fully sure how to answer this.
