Description
System Info
CPU: Intel i7-13700K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z690 Gaming X DDR4 (latest BIOS)
GPU: XFX RX 6750 XT 12GB (dual BIOS, tested both modes)
RAM: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz
macOS: Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe build
Bootloader: OpenCore (latest release)
Kext: NootRX (latest release)
iGPU: Disabled
Displays: 3× 1080p with DP to DVI Adapters + 1× 4K TV (HDMI)
Issue Description
After enabling NootRX, the system experiences intermittent GPU freezes during, idle, normal use or video playback.
During the freeze:
- Mouse cursor continues to move smoothly
- Audio playback continues normally
- The entire UI becomes unresponsive for ~5–10 seconds
- Occasionally colored squares or horizontal artifacts appear before recovery
The issue occurs randomly, not just under high GPU load or Video playing.
Logs & Observations
I’ve collected kernel logs from both boot and during the freeze — attached below.
What’s Been Tried
- Tested both Quiet and Performance BIOS modes on the GPU.
- Confirmed no issues under Windows or Linux (stress tested).
- Reinstalled macOS cleanly — same behavior.
- Tried downgrading to Ventura, but enabling NootRX causes a boot loop right after installation (cannot log in).
- Removed WhateverGreen entirely (NootRX only).
- Verified PCIe power, lane configuration, and AGDP patching.
- Confirmed VT-d enabled, Above 4G Decoding ON, Resize BAR Disabed.
Also confirmed that this behavior occurs even with a single display connected via HDMI, without any converters.
Notes
The GPU works flawlessly in Windows and Linux. The issue appears limited to macOS with NootRX active.
All fans, temps, and clocks remain stable during the freeze.
Thanks in advance for your time and effort maintaining this project — your work makes high-end AMD GPUs viable on macOS! 🙏
