We can merge this (I'll rebase soon), but I do think that we need to widen the tests to multiple field variables, thats where there's been confusion. |

I think it turned out that the cuda mapreduce was working when I had added these tests. This PR was applied after our space constructors, so I'd suggest just restarting this PR from scratch if this becomes important. |
