Unable to change theme

I think JupyterLab comes with a dark and a light theme by default. I can find the option to change to them in the Settings, shown below:

Clicking on "light" or "dark" doesn't actually do anything, though. It just resets it back to "inherit." Reloading doesn't help, nor does shutting down and restarting the server. Is this getting hard-coded somewhere?
