How does compass-env() work?

I can’t seem to use compass-env() properly. I want to write conditional CSS based on whether or not I am in a development environment.

(I’m using compass-rails.)

Sorry, Chris, that was pretty weak, huh.

I have tried variants of this:

@if compass-env == 'development'

But that never seems to be true.

And when I try things like this:

@if compass-env() == 'development'

then I get:

undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass

The former is just testing if an identifier equals a string so it's always false.

The latter is right, but it seems like a bug in a compass-rails environment.

I would have never removed the parentheses if it weren’t for the fact that I got that error with them :)
