CMake Modernization Guide

Current State Analysis

Your CMakeLists.txt is functional but uses some patterns that are outdated:

Issue #1: Platform-Specific Compiler Flags

Problem

Issues:

  • ❌ Modifying global CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS is fragile
  • ❌ Compiler flags repeated in CMakeLists.txt AND platform detection
  • ❌ Difficult to track which flags are set where
  • ❌ Doesn't work well with target-based configuration

Issue #2: Object Libraries and Manual Linking

Problem

Issues:

  • ❌ Objects don't automatically propagate include directories

  • ❌ Fragile - easy to forget dependencies
  • ❌ Doesn't scale well with multiple targets

Issue #3: Global Include Directories

Problem

Issue #4: C++ Standard Configuration

Problem

Issues:

  • ❌ No per-target control
  • ❌ Can't mix C++17 and C++20 code
  • ❌ Extensions can be accidentally enabled/disabled

Issue #5: Missing Modern Features

Not Implemented

  • ❌ No package version checking
  • ❌ No cross-platform output paths
  • ❌ No proper test integration
  • ❌ No install rules
  • ❌ No documentation generation integration
  • ❌ No code coverage setup

Migration Guide

Step 1: Backup Current

Validation

After applying modern CMakeLists.txt:
