Compilation error when missing clang

On Ubuntu 25.10, installing tree-sitter-cli fails when missing clang because rquickjs seems to depend on it.

Here's the original issue in tree-sitter repo, and here's the error log: tscli-log.txt

Installing clang with sudo apt install clang fixes the issue.

This is unrelated to us, I don't have tree-sitter-cli in my Cargo.lock, this is probably related to another dependency that you are using.

This must be a misunderstanding: The point is that tree-sitter has rquickjs in its Cargo.toml, and for that reason cannot be compiled without a recent clang. (The attached log shows that the compilation failure is in this crate, not one of ours.)

Here's the relevant part:

If there is something wrong on our side, I'd appreciate an explanation. (I looked through your documentation but couldn't find anything that would explain this.)

That might be a new import from quickjs-ng. We dont do anything different or fancy here beyond calling the cc crate. I have not seen anything different in my build and we build on all platforms.

What platform is that happening?

Yes, sounds like it. The original report is with stock Ubuntu 25.10; I cannot reproduce this on macOS 26 (unsurprisingly since this uses Clang by default).

It seems to be a common issue with C based project, I found rust-rocksdb/rust-rocksdb#903 and godot-rust/gdnative#234

At this point the issue should be open on quickjs-ng I think.

Seems like the header was deprecated in C23 (https://en.cppreference.com/w/c/header/stdbool). That might be why it fails on a very recent ubuntu? @gaheldev can you share which compiler and version you have

Anyway you don't need clang but you do need a compiler C99 at least and for the basic std to be in path. I don't think its an issue in rquickjs.

Well, not an issue in the sense of a bug that needs to be fixed; more like a heads-up and a suggestion for documentation. (But, yes, much more context is needed that only the OP can provide.)

Alright so it seems like the reason its fixed by clang is that it depends on libgcc-${version}-dev so installing that lib directly should also solve the issue. I will make a note to add it to the README.
