How do I set the game for wide screen?

I used the command prompts to set the resolution to my computer screen, 3840x1080 and set the aspect to 3.555. But while the opening cut scene to the level was full wide screen, once in my ship the aspect was back to 16:9 (with black sections on either side of the screen.
-width 3840 -height 1080 -aspect 3.555

I don't know exactly why this is a thing, but you can just press the + and - keys in order to adjust the black sections until they're gone. Hope that helps.
This only works on a US keyboard layout though.
