Pagefile grows in size while watching Youtube with hardware acceleration enabled - win10 21h2

While watching youtube videos, the size of the pagefile.sys grows uncontrollably, 3gb a minute of the video being played. The RAM usage stays normal. The issue disappears after disabling hardware acceleration.

It does not, it only happens on r3dfox.

Ok, I have a weird idea. What happens if you replace the d3dcompiler_47.dll in the r3dfox folder with the one from the fork above?

If that doesn't change anything or the browser fails to launch, try deleting the api-ms-win-* dlls, msvcp140.dll, ucrtbase.dll, vcruntime140.dll, and vcruntime140_1.dll in the r3dfox folder, and replace them with the respective dlls from that release of the fork above?

Replaced them, but nope. After about 3.5 minutes of video playback, the pagefile explodes in size and doesn't stop growing until the video is paused.

What happens if you delete all of the specified files from the r3dfox folder and try?

Also can you tell me what version this first appeared in?

1. if I remove the files, the r3dfox doesn't launch.

2. It's..complicated. It only happens on v139.0.4 64-bit, but only on the installer version. Surprisingly, portable works fine even with hardware acceleration enabled. Doesn't happen on v128.12.0rc either, at least on the portable build.

Also I forgot Firefox is weird and it hard requires the files in dependentlibs.list to exist. So you also need to remove all the api-ms-win-* definitions from it.

Another thing to try, copy r3dfox.exe to an installed copy of the e3k fork, see if it's able to run the e3k files, see if issue occurs.

Nothing. Works fine.

Still get the same "Couldn't load XPCOM" error.

Another thing to try, copy r3dfox.exe to an installed copy of the e3k fork, see if it's able to run the e3k files, see if issue occurs.

Version error. r3dfox refuses to run the e3k fork as it's version 139.0.5 while r3dfox is 139.0.4.

I just realized something.

Extract a fresh portable copy of r3dfox, in the r3dfox folder, create a Profile folder, then copy the profile (both roaming and local) of your installed copy of r3dfox into it. See if the issue occurs there. (You may have multiple profiles, so check about:support in the r3dfox that has the issue to get the exact profile folder.)

Also could try this which would give me more info, but even then I'm not sure what to do here nor does anyone else seem to have the issue

I just realized something.

See if the issue occurs there. (You may have multiple profiles, so check about:support in the r3dfox that has the issue to get the exact profile folder.)

The issue actually disappears when the extension is enabled.

So something in r3dfox (but not https://github.com/e3kskoy7wqk/Firefox-for-windows-7/?) broke VP9 (or perhaps AV1 since 10 and maybe recent GPU) hardware decoding. However it is only broken when r3dfox is installed and not the portable version.

I have no idea how to trace this other than just releasing a basic test build that is e3k's patches + r3dfox mozconfig + r3dfox branding and see if it occurs there.

I'll release full r3dfox 140 when I get to it, and if it still occurs there, I'll make the test build.

I had the same issue just about a few hours ago in r3dfox 140.0.4 that was following me for months.

Today I've tried to tinker with different versions of aforementioned fork for Windows 7, and the issue was still present in both versions 140 and 144 (installed 140 first, then upgraded it to 144). After that I've tried to download portable version of r3dfox 140 and played some VP9 videos from YouTube (both portable and installed versions were open at the same time).

And for some reason after that the issues was fixed (even after rebooting my system), my pagefile no longer grows like 100 MB/s.
I'll watch closely if the issue still occurs on my system, but I had no issues so far in the last 2 hours.

Update: AV1 videos on YouTube still cause 100 MB/s pagefile's growth. Disabling AV1 in about:config would probably do it for me for now, as YouTube falls back to VP9.
