Steps
- Tap the browser’s menu button.
- Tap the Extensions button.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the extensions list to find the "Translate this page" option (button).
- Tap the "Translate this page" (TWP's) option.
- The extension's "Translate this page" drawer (the drawer that opens at the top, labeled "Translate this page?" and containing the Settings, Translate, and Undo buttons) will open.
- 6.1. Tap the "Translate" button.
6.2. Or tap the Settings (gear icon) button. Then select "Choose another language" to change the language. Then tap the "Translate" button.
Big Issue - Expected Result
As you can see, having to go through so many steps on every website is very tedious and ruins the user experience. Also, when filling out a form in a foreign language, we constantly have to repeat this process: translating the field descriptions before typing anything into each field. This is because TWP translates what we type into the fields as well, which messes up the text. I type these fields in my native language, then select the entire text within the field and translate it using DeepL Pro. I do this to ensure the translation is accurate for an official form. Then I read through the translation to verify it.
But TWP messes up what I’ve written in my native language.
So every time, I have to open the translation, click “Translate,” and then “Undo” the translation. This ruins the user experience.
Improvements/Developments needed to resolve the issues:
- The issue with translating the text in the form fields needs to be fixed.
- The following features should be added. The issues should also be fixed.
Expected Result
Issue 1:
Having to press three buttons to turn the page takes too long (especially when doing this on every page) and becomes tedious. It negatively impacts the user experience. It should open with a single button. On desktop and laptop computers, the extension button can be pinned to the taskbar. On mobile devices, it cannot be pinned because there isn’t enough space—the screen width is insufficient.
Improvements/Developments needed to resolve the issues:
- A small square "Call the drawer" button should be added.
- A small button that opens/calls the "Translate this page" drawer should be added inside this drawer. Pressing the button should open the "Translate this page" drawer.
- When the drawer closes, the small square translation drawer should open. This feature must also be added for this to work.
Issue 2:
On mobile devices, the "Translate this page" drawer that appears on the screen (which displays text such as "Translate this page?" and includes "Settings" (gear icon), "Translate," and "Undo" buttons) remains open.
Improvements/Developments needed to resolve the issues:
- A button to close the "Translate this page" panel should be added to the panel on smartphones.
- An option to set how long the panel stays open should be added to the TWP settings menu.
- By default, it should close after 2 seconds. Users should be able to change this duration via the Settings menu.
- The top of the page should align with the bottom of the panel. This is because on small screens (such as phones), it obstructs the view. The top of the page typically contains a bar with menus and buttons. I cannot see these buttons. Every time, I have to swipe the "Translate this page" panel to the side and close it. This ruins the user experience. Additionally, when I need to translate again, I have to tap the "Translate this page" button three more times. This cycle results in a terrible experience.
Issue 3:
Every time, I have to swipe the "Translate this page" drawer to the side to close it. On mobile devices, doing this in "Desktop view" mode is very difficult. Because the drawer is tiny on a small screen. If I’ve zoomed in by spreading two fingers apart, I have to zoom out by bringing my two fingers together to see the full width of the page. If we don’t zoom out completely, or can’t, or think we’ve zoomed out completely but haven’t (i.e., if we’re not seeing the full width of the page), swiping the “Translate this page” drawer to the side doesn’t close it. Because you have to swipe the drawer all the way to the side. To do this, the entire width of the screen must be visible (you need to zoom out all the way to the end of the page’s width, meaning you need to fit the page’s width entirely onto the screen).
Improvements/Developments needed to resolve the issues:
- A button to close the "Translate this page" panel should be added to the panel on the smartphone.
- An option to set how long the drawer stays open should be added to the TWP settings menu.
