Modal Focus Management, Stacking, and Scroll Lock Behavior - Design Specification

Summary

This PR delivers comprehensive design specifications for modal focus management, stacking, and scroll lock behavior in Fluxora-Frontend. These specifications ensure consistent, accessible, and predictable modal interactions across all user flows and states.

Problem

Fluxora lacked a unified modal system with proper focus management and stacking behavior:

  • Inconsistent focus management across modal components
  • No modal stacking system for complex user flows
  • Basic scroll lock implementation with layout shift issues
  • Limited accessibility compliance for modal interactions
  • Missing modal state management for nested scenarios

Solution

1. Comprehensive Modal System Design

Created MODAL_FOCUS_MANAGEMENT_DESIGN_SPEC.md with:

  • Modal classification (Primary, Secondary, System) with priority levels
  • Complete state management (default, loading, empty, error, success)
  • Focus management specifications with trap implementation and restoration
  • Modal stacking system with z-index hierarchy (1100-1400)
  • Scroll lock behavior with scrollbar compensation and position preservation

2. Implementation-Ready Component Architecture

Delivered MODAL_IMPLEMENTATION_HANDOFF.md with:

  • BaseModal component template with TypeScript interfaces
  • useModalManager and useModalAccessibility hooks
  • ModalManager and ScrollLockManager classes
  • CSS module specifications using existing design tokens
  • Migration guide for existing modal components

3. Accessibility Compliance Documentation

  • WCAG 2.1 AA compliance requirements for all modal interactions
  • Screen reader support specifications (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack)
  • Keyboard navigation patterns and focus management
  • ARIA implementation guidelines and testing procedures

4. Enhanced User Experience

  • Smart Focus Trapping: Automatic focus trap with logical tab order
  • Visual Stack Indicators: Backdrop opacity and scale changes for modal depth
  • Seamless Scroll Behavior: Zero layout shifts when modals open/close
  • Responsive Design: Mobile-optimized modal interactions

Key Features

Focus Management

  • Intelligent Focus Trap: Automatic focus trapping with restoration to trigger element
  • Dynamic Focus Handling: Handle content changes and dynamically added elements
  • Initial Focus Control: Configurable initial focus element for optimal UX
  • Focus Group Prioritization: Primary actions prioritized over secondary elements

Modal Stacking

  • Priority-Based Z-Index: Low (1100), Medium (1200), High (1300), Critical (1400)
  • Visual Depth Indicators: Backdrop opacity and scale changes for stack depth
  • LIFO Stack Management: Last In, First Out with priority override support
  • Focus Transfer: Smooth focus transitions between stacked modals

Scroll Lock Behavior

  • Reference Counting: Handle multiple modals without conflicts
  • Scrollbar Compensation: Prevent layout shifts when hiding page scrollbars
  • Position Preservation: Maintain scroll position across modal interactions
  • Mobile Optimization: Handle touch scrolling and viewport changes

Accessibility First

  • WCAG 2.1 AA Compliance: Full accessibility compliance throughout
  • Screen Reader Support: Comprehensive ARIA implementation
  • Keyboard Navigation: Complete keyboard-only operation
  • Visual Accessibility: High contrast, text scaling, reduced motion support
