Yeah no, if constant "Reloading player..." will continue to be an issue, then it might be an end to this. Because literally with UBlock + Firefox it's watchable on a consistent scale, this is not anymore. |

I my case my default quality is 1080p, playback works while not behind a SOCKS5 Proxy. Only while behind a proxy do I get this bug. 2026-04-01.12-10-57.mp4 |

From a MacOS point of view: There is a change in this version which breaks the reloading of videos (Command+R). This reload can be helpful in scenarios mentioned in #1005 (which has comments locked) and additionally when videos change their video quality to 360p such as from network issues. I would love to give a comment on that issue to 👍 the feature request. For the rest of the update: It looks great! The new player is sharp, and it's nice to see the return of video length and ages for sidebar (recommended) videos. |

@lisa There never was a reload video keyboard shortcut (which is why the feature request to add one is still open), the buggy restart window shortcut was intentionally removed, as per the changelog in the release and in this discussion:

Hi @Celiturbo you are right that isnt viable. I hadnt really thought about that when writing the changelog. The proper workaround is to reopen the video. Ill update the changelog to reflect this
I wont argue with you on this because reason for removal is listed in the changelog. You never had any problems but thousands of users ran into allot of issues. |

Yeah, the issue is opening something in a new window is to watch it later so the source link has been closed or navigated away from. Save lists are nice and all but I just want to middle click a video in up next so its waiting in a new window when the current one finished or nothing better has been found in a search, rather than being forgotten about in a list. Often its gone stale and wont play when I get to it, rarely the new window didn't even load anything more than a gray screen and so nothing is in history. Ctrl+r generally recovered this to the correct video that would have been lost otherwise. |

Gray screen yes. Videos loading after window has been open for some time has been better on dev builds I noticed recently but not totally resolved. I see nothing additional that has gone into the release build to suggest otherwise vs recent dev builds but I've only been on 24 since earlier this evening. The gray screen I don't see being a FT issue anyway, only happens when lack of available ram is an issue. |

Slower loading is expected, it will be especially noticeable if you have a slower internet connection, as it has to download more data during playback now, you can thank YouTube for that. |

it's great that all those changes are finally released, but this particular decision is a bit concerning for me. i don't know any other tool that can still download auto-translated english subtitles. yt-dlp seems stuck with the fact that freetube can still display them is even mentioned in yt-dlp/yt-dlp#13831 (comment). |

We just have some workarounds in-place to make auto-translated subtitles work in our player, workarounds that downloaders could easily implement too, they just haven't done it yet. The fact that downloaders are not using the same approach as FreeTube yet is the only reason it still works in FreeTube, so YouTube hasn't added the ratelimiting to that approach yet, which they probably will once downloaders start abusing it (there are people on the yt-dlp repo talking about downloading all of the auto-translated subtitles for every video they download, so you can see why YouTube might have an issue with that). |

Hi, I am on GNU/Linux Mint 21.3 (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10710U CPU @ 1.10GHz & 16GB RAM). When I do not use a VPN, the newest version works fine. I do get a message about a SABR countdown of 4 seconds. Then the video loads. As soon as I use my VPN (ExpressVPN) after the countdown the page reloads ("Reloading player according to SABR request") and the 4sec countdown resumes over and over again. I thought maybe this is an IP issue, so I used Japan, Azerbaijan or Belarus to see if using other IPs helps, it does not. Thank you! |

Long time user of the program here, congratulations on another major release! Clearly a lot of work went into it. I have one point of critique. I'm not sure if this is the right place for it, but I came across a regression with this change:
In the new version v24, I realized this commit was included. Unfortunately, this breaks the way I have been using FreeTube. The combination of the "Hide Watched Videos" toggle being ON and "Limit videos to 1" was, for me, the ultimate distraction-free view of the subscriptions page and my default setting. While this function technically remains the same, since now all watched videos are hidden everywhere, there is no way of seeing them unless I go into the settings and change it. Given that this commit started out as a request for an option to hide watched videos specifically on the videos page (with the proposed solution to add a filter), the current implementation has inadvertently removed my option to see watched videos on the videos page while still hiding them on the subscriptions page. What is the best way to proceed? Should I open a dedicated issue for this, or would you prefer to continue the discussion here? Thanks for considering this! |

We opted for a different direction that was proposed in the issue and you can read more here #7366 (comment) We unfortunately cant have multiple toggles for hiding videos on different places. That would just become unmaintainable. Most people when they want to hide something they want to be hidden everywhere especially when it comes to videos. I unfortunately dont have suggestion for what you can do with your usecase |

Thanks for your response and for explaining the reasoning behind the global toggle. I love the dedication and passion you guys consistently pour into FreeTube! I understand the concern about maintainability and don't want to create more complexity, but I don't think I got my point across last time. Personally, I don't feel the need to globally hide all watched videos, I often rewatch older ones or just like to browse through them. My core concern is that the "Limit the number of videos per channel" setting on the Subscriptions page is now effectively broken. Before v24, combining "Limit to X" with "Hide Watched" gave a clean feed of new content. Now, "Limit to X" simply shows the last video (watched or not), creating a list of watched videos that defeats the purpose of the setting. This is the core regression I mentioned earlier: the Limit function no longer serves its intended purpose of filtering for fresh content on the Subscriptions page. I suspect this behavior wasn't the original intention, but I'd love to hear your perspective on it. After some usage and familiarization with the updated FreeTube version, I'd like to share a suggestion for a minor update that avoids a conflict between two similar toggles. I believe this would fix the regression introduced in the last update. My Proposal: Instead of having two separate toggles, what if the previous subscription options "Limit the number of videos displayed for each channel" and "Hide Videos on Watch" were merged into a single, clearer function: "Limit the number of unwatched videos for each channel"? This results in cleaner logic: "Limit to 1 Unseen" naturally creates an endless feed of fresh content (one per channel), which feels very natural for a subscriptions page. This change would primarily affect the Subscriptions page, restoring the Limit function's utility while leaving the Videos page intact for users who want to hide watched videos or those who like to review earlier watched content. Would this be something the team could consider for a future update? I'm happy to help clarify the use case if needed. |

No, it's not. I believe the "Limit number of videos per channel" function should hide watched videos by default, regardless of the now global "Hide watched videos" toggle. This only makes sense, it's how people use that function, they want a fresh video on the subscription page once they've watched the previous one. |

I don't know much about this; I only downloaded it to try it out, but I barely got it to work. For some reason, the longer videos aren't showing up. When I click on the videos tab in any channel, I get this error: TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'metadata_parts'). The only videos I can see are the short ones. |

YouTube has recently changed something on their side, beaking FreeTube. This will be fixed but in the meantime you can enable RSS in the settings to have a workaround (with some limitations like video length not shown) |
