Create Reliable NPM Packages

My experience with the NPM package so far has not been good. I have learned that it is quite difficult to configure a project to reliably produce packages simultaneously usable (and idiomatic) for ESM, CJS, and browser contexts. I'm working on a PR now that attempts to make things better. @2byrds , has suggested this could be helpful. If anyone has any feedback for me (things I should know, background as to why things are currently set up the way they are, etc.), please respond in this thread!
