Ubuntu 24 builders now available for GCP Buildpacks

Hey folks, its been a while since I've made a post like this; I hope you're all doing well.

I wanted to drop a quick note here to say that we're beginning to make our transition towards Ubuntu 24 (Noble Numbat) base images with the introduction of the Google 24 stack. Notes that latest tag will still point to google-22 for now (see What's next )

Using the new builder

You can find the new builder at gcr.io/buildpacks/builder:google24

What's new?

Aside from the obvious change in the base image, we've worked hard to make this a straightforward switchover. With google-22 we really tried to slim down the surface area of packages and switch over to reliable providers. google-24 takes advantage of the foundation we built with google-22 and is another reliable builder for your applications.

Why should you upgrade?

The current latest tag points to google-22, which uses Ubuntu 22 underneath the hood. With Ubuntu 22 moving to Extended Security Maintenance in April 2027, we wanted to give you a head start on using Ubuntu 24 before the ESM date.

What's next?

Here's a rough outline on how we're approaching this release:

1. Release the builders on our Artifact Registry repo (we are here)
2. Introduce it to Run beta. As some of you know, gcloud run deploy --source . with no --base-image defaults to using gcr.io/buildpacks/builder:google-22. This is how we do the magical auto-language detection. Our next step is to introduce the Google 24 builder as the default when using gcloud **beta** run deploy --source .
3. If everything looks good, we'll start switching over the defaults on Run to use Google 24, and then we'll update latest to point to Google 24 stack.
