Customize footnotes

Are there any options to customize how footnotes appear? Currently they appear inside a <sup> tag. I wanted to customize it to appear more like a reference, say, for instance: [1].

I am relatively new to CSS and hence don't know much about styling footnotes. Any help/pointers will be extremely helpful. Thanks!
