Adding current context (March 2026):

Where the NMDC ENVO value set work lives now:

• microbiomedata/external-metadata-awareness — primary home for NCBI/NMDC env triad analysis
  • notebooks/environmental_context_value_sets/ — voting sheet generator (soil, water, sediment, plant-associated env triads for env_broad_scale / env_local_scale / env_medium)
  • env_triads_flattened MongoDB collection — 9.3M normalized triad component records from ~3M NCBI biosamples
  • Known gaps documented in voting-sheet-generation-readme.md: plant-associated and sediment samples lack single parent class, ENVO-exclusive annotation (no PO/other ontologies)
• microbiomedata/submission-schema — downstream consumer; env triad value sets from EMA voting sheets feed into portal enumerations

On the INSDC-vs-NMDC reconciliation specifically:

• The broader INSDC reconciliation question (which ENVO terms appear in INSDC submissions vs. what NMDC uses/recommends) is not tracked in a single place
• Closest active work: submission-schema issues #376 (INSDC country names), #300, #299 (value set aggregation)
• The curated NMDC ENVO subset spreadsheet mentioned in the original issue: not located — may be in a Google Drive or lost to time

Still open: a systematic diff of "terms NMDC recommends" vs. "terms that actually appear in INSDC biosample submissions at scale." EMA has the NCBI usage data; the NMDC side is in submission-schema. No one has joined them formally.
