It would be great if the project was taken up again and compatibility with iOS higher than iOS 6 was added. It would be tiring for many people and these iPhones that are stuck on iOS 7.1.2 would have a second use as a player.

That's correct, I have internship now and that will be over in 3 months. I might find some time to work on this in the meantime but it's a fulltime job.

I was planning on making apps for iOS 9, so iPod Touch 5, iPad 2 and iPhone 4s and iPad Air 1, I suppose I could put iOS 7 as minimum version but I need a MacBook to run OS X El Capitan or so for the newer Xcode.

The project is not dead it's just paused as I have a lot to do at the moment.

I don't know if this will help, but I do think you can use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to get a newer version of OS X (or even macOS (mac os 11 and higher) if you are lucky) on a old MacBook.
It's super simple, installed it on a iMac9,1 (iMac (20-inch, Early 2009)) and I got it from El Capitan, to Big Sur (OSX 10.11 > macOS 11)
Assuming you have a Macbook, the compatibility list can be found at these links:

• MacBook Air
• MacBook Pro

If you are not interested in going the OCLP path, a VM could be used (hard to do)
or
I could leave my MacBook 4,1, which I got to OS X Mojave, on 24/7 and you can use AnyDesk, or TeamViewer, etc to connect to it and use it that way. This will be slow as it is using a spinning hard drive, but on the bright side I have a 3GB internet speed! (the macbook's max speed is 1GB though.)

Little update, I just found updated tokens for playplay, I will check if I can manage to get the obfuscated decryption keys for OGG tracks. I will check if iOS 6 supports the codecs for the mp3/4 audio files provided by Spotify. I believe DRM free music should be possible to be played straight from Spotify without needing to constantly get a new playplay token.

I might need to still find a way to convert OGG to mp3 on device. I should be able to get rid of the websocket parts as we won't need that when using playplay to get the keys.

Also, I know how the playback status reporting works now, I will add that too. Works with Discord and I assume adding that would also register the tracks played in your Spotify playback history. For the ones that want privacy without playback history or Discord status reporting, I'll add a setting to disable this feature.

This new playplay token is 4 days old so I hope it works, if I get this working the app will be functional again, and I will add music visualization, YouTube music and probably YouTube video playback too, if I can get the iOS media player working properly as YouTube doesn't provide the older codecs for all videos for some reason.

If pp causing so many problems, why not just use widevine? it will give you m4a files that should play just fine?

I don't know how widevine works. I'm just gonna for now make it play the not encrypted 96kbps mp3 format Spotify provides.
