When I click on a closed way in Knife tool mode, it only inserts a new node in the way and shows a warning ("Closed way can be split by selecting two or more nodes" or some similar).
It's normal, but not helpful. I think we need a "cut line" mode of knife tool: drawing a line cuts the affected geometries. It would be more convenient if it would close the new ways.
In brief, I'm finding the opposite of Combine buildings.
