Report: Successful Build and Boot of Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute) with Kernel 7.0.x on Orange Pi 5 & 5 Plus!

I want to thank Joshua-Riek for maintaining this incredible project, which has allowed me to enjoy my Orange Pi 5 and 5 Plus for so long. To liven up discussions, I’d like to share my success in building and booting a custom Ubuntu 26.04 (Resolute) image on both boards.

Build Highlights:

• System: Ubuntu 26.04 with Kernel 7.0.x-rockchip, built via GitHub Actions.
• Optimization: Removed heavy snaps to bring the compressed .img.xz down to ~1.78GB, avoiding upload limits.
• Performance: Enabled mesa-2404 for excellent GPU acceleration on the RK3588.
• Boot: Used a custom gzip-compressed kernel, which works better with U-Boot than the EFI-based generic kernel.

While early 26.04 builds have minor bugs, the system is remarkably stable. Thank you again, Joshua, for your work!

I think the script I wrote is sufficient for creating a disk image.
Please check out my GitHub repository.

The kernel configuration is specific to my environment, so You need to adapt the contents of my-add.txt to your environment.

In order to shorten build time, unnecessary items are omitted as much as possible.

Actually, I have made the test install images available in the "Releases" section of my GitHub repository!
Feel free to download and test the latest .img.xz files from there.

Any hints how to put the bootloader for this build into the SPI flash storage and the image onto an NVME to boot from it?

Hi, thank you for your question!

I haven't tested flashing the bootloader to the SPI flash or booting directly from an NVMe SSD, as I use a JMB582 controller with a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. However, here are some insights based on my build process:

1. How to Build the SPI Binary:
   Mainline U-Boot supports creating u-boot-rockchip-spi.bin using "binman". You can enable this with:

./scripts/config --enable CONFIG_ROCKCHIP_SPI_IMAGE

Note: Flashing an untested U-Boot to SPI carries a risk of bricking the board, so please proceed with caution.

2. NVMe Boot Configuration:
   I modify include/configs/rockchip-common.h in my script to enable NVMe target devices, which may help with your configuration:

define BOOT_TARGET_DEVICES_NVME(func) func(NVME, nvme, 0, 0, 0) func(NVME, nvme, 0, 0, 1)
