Displaying direction path between points

I would like to display the direction from dynamic data, ie from point A -point B - point C - etc.
On a high level, whats the best way to achieve this?

1. use directionService with a specific mode, for eg. BICYCLING, this somehow generates a path?
2. use directionsRenderer - this will draw the line based on the path directionService generates?
