ditch zooming completely, work on filters #749

I wonder if we should ditch zooming completely, as it's probably not really that useful in practice... Afair I copied that UX from some other tool, but I never really use it myself either 🤷

What do you think?

As I had some discussion with people on that, here is my take on this:

  • I agree that zoom vs. filter is often confusing.
  • especially "zoom in on thread"
  • rarely I have a visual bug in the timeline where "zoom out" does not "repaint" the previously seen, then "hidden by zoom" cycles (the timeline appears to have no cycles for anything else than the previously zoomed in part)

There is one place where it is quite useful though: apply your global filters and have a look, then zoom in to a single time frame, then zoom out again.
Using filter for the time means you have to reset all filters.

So my suggestion is:

  • get rid of zoom in all places but "zoom in on time" in the timeline
  • later (follow-up issue) replace the zoom time by a "real zoom" (incrementing/decrementing the horizonal size, adding a scrollbar in the timeline, adding visual buttons for the zoom as
  • possibly also a follow-up issue: provide a dropdown in the menu that shows all active filters and allow to delete single entries from there
