Watergroep
How can VR and gamification assist construction and safety training in real life techniques.
Dangers/scenario's?

What would the VR part do or what would it consist of

Main focus would be learning. In this case about signals.
There will first be an individual stage of learning. The basics for every position.

Most efficient way of learning with VR

There are quiet some ways to learn. VR can enhance that tremendously
but you have to make sure it isn't gimmicky. This isn't only for VR, but
it generally is used for gimmicky stuff.
So we need to make sure that we don't follow the same path.
Different ways of learning
(b) Spaced repetition
What does this mean? Evidence-based learning. (Learning is more
effective when study sessions are spaced out).
For example(Reflective safety vests: When learning you have to put
on your safety vest each time. )
(c) Consequences of actions - Trial and error
What does this mean? It means that every action has a reaction. If
you do something unsafe there will be a chance of something bad
happening.
It also isn't immediately game over or a failed mission. Depending
on the severity of the health and safety training you can either fail or
succeed but with a mark on the test until you solve it again(or
something similar) without making the same mistake.
For example(asbestos: a short cutscene at the end of the exercise
where one person who did it correctly lived long and happily ever after
end your avatar coughing and getting diagnosed with cancer.
For example(back safety: a short cutscene where you, as a senior,
walk with your back arched because of pain)
(d) Learning through actions

What is the point of the training? And how do we achieve maximum effect.
Health and safety should be a second nature. They should do it without
consciously acting or thinking on it. To do it needs to get in the long
term memory as fast as possible.
This can be done with spaced repetition . If you do an
assignment correctly the time till you review it gets doubled. And if
you remembered it succesfuly a couple of times in a row you put it in
your long term memory. It makes sure the information is always
accesible, which is vital when dealing with health and safety.
Another part is trial and error . While in the beginning the
user gets enough explanation and hints, later on it lessens and the user
needs to make decisions himself.
For example the user gets a truck with 5 different traffic signs on
them. He needs to place the correct one and hopefully pick the right
one. Picking the wrong one can have drastic consequences. Placing a
Major road(voorrangsweg) instead of a STOP sign could cause a traffic
accident with grave consequences.
The user will not be immediately reminded of the mistake but the game
will continue and then the bad consequence will happen. You learn more
from mistakes if they are memorable.
Different kinds of missions.
