Get Your Site Indexed - Quick Start Guide

🎯 Goal

Get kevarellano.com ranking #1 for "kevarellano" and "Kevin Arellano" searches.

Step 1: Google Search Console (CRITICAL - Do This First)

Setup (5 minutes)

  1. Go to: https://search.google.com/search-console
  2. Click "Start now" and sign in with your Google account
  3. Click "Add property" → Enter: kevarellano.com
  4. Choose verification method:

Option A: HTML File Upload (Easiest)

  • Download the verification file (e.g., google1234567890abcdef.html)
  • Upload it to your portfolio folder
  • Deploy to Netlify
  • Click "Verify" in Search Console

Option B: DNS Verification (Recommended if you manage DNS)

  • Add the TXT record to your domain's DNS settings
  • Wait 5-10 minutes for DNS propagation
  • Click "Verify"

After Verification

  1. Submit your sitemap:

    • In Search Console, go to "Sitemaps" (left sidebar)
    • Enter: sitemap.xml
    • Click "Submit"

  2. Request indexing:

    • Go to "URL Inspection" (top bar)
    • Enter: https://kevarellano.com/
    • Click "Request Indexing"
    • Wait 1-7 days for Google to crawl

Step 2: Build Backlinks (Do This Today)

GitHub Profile

  1. Go to: https://github.com/kevarellano
  2. Edit profile → Add website: https://kevarellano.com
  3. Update bio to mention "Kevin Arellano - Infrastructure Engineer"

LinkedIn Profile

  1. Go to: https://linkedin.com/in/kevarellano
  2. Edit "Contact Info" → Add website: https://kevarellano.com
  3. Update headline to include your full name

Hashnode Blog

  1. Go to: https://kevops.hashnode.dev/
  2. Update blog settings → Add website link
  3. Write a new post introducing yourself:
    • Title: "Hi, I'm Kevin Arellano - Infrastructure Engineer"
    • Include link to kevarellano.com
    • Mention your name 3-5 times naturally

Dev Community (Optional but Helpful)

  1. Create account at: https://dev.to
  2. Cross-post your Hashnode articles
  3. Add kevarellano.com to your profile

Step 3: Bing Webmaster Tools (Bonus)

  1. Go to: https://www.bing.com/webmasters
  2. Sign in with Microsoft account
  3. Add site: kevarellano.com
  4. Verify (similar to Google)
  5. Submit sitemap: sitemap.xml

Step 4: Monitor Progress

Check Indexing Status

  • Google: site:kevarellano.com in search
  • Should show your homepage within 1-7 days

Check Rankings

  • Search: kevarellano
  • Search: Kevin Arellano
  • Search: Kevin Arellano infrastructure engineer

Expected Timeline

  • Day 1-3: Site gets crawled by Google
  • Day 3-7: Site appears in site:kevarellano.com search
  • Week 2-3: Site starts ranking for "kevarellano"
  • Week 3-4: Ranking #1 for your name (no competition)
  • Month 2+: Ranking for "infrastructure engineer Atlanta" etc.

Step 5: Ongoing Optimization

Content Updates

  • Add blog posts to kevarellano.com (or link from Hashnode)
  • Update projects section when you build new things
  • Keep sitemap.xml lastmod dates current

Social Signals

  • Share your site on Twitter/X
  • Post on relevant Reddit communities (r/webdev, r/rust)
  • Engage in tech communities with your site in signature

Consider adding privacy-friendly analytics:

Troubleshooting

Site Not Indexed After 7 Days?

  1. Check Search Console for crawl errors
  2. Verify robots.txt allows crawling: https://kevarellano.com/robots.txt
  3. Check sitemap is accessible: https://kevarellano.com/sitemap.xml
  4. Request indexing again

Ranking Lower Than Expected?

  1. Add more content (blog posts)
  2. Get more backlinks (GitHub, LinkedIn, dev.to)
  3. Ensure your name appears naturally in content
  4. Wait - SEO takes time (2-8 weeks for new sites)
