Questions about Test assignments

When I was looking for other examples of Test assignments, I came across this thread on Reddit - Take home assignment for Android positions

It contains various opinions, but mostly people are against "large test assignments" and consider them excessive and not particularly necessary.

At the same time, based on my own experience, I can say that in 90% of the companies I've worked for, a test assignment was required. And now, when I interview new Android developers, I even suggest giving a test assignment first and then inviting them for an interview. The idea is that during the interview, we can discuss not only the topics that interest us but also the code written by the developer.

What do you think/how does your company handle test assignments?

• Does your company use test assignments, or do you consider them excessive?
• How do you evaluate developers' code before hiring?
• What do you think is the ideal size for a test assignment?
• Should there be time limitations?
