Essentially, using old style fullscreen that overlays on top of the desktop rather than requesting its own pane in mission control no longer gets exclusive GPU access. It seems this regressed when native fullscreen windowing support was added for lion+ sometime around 2.8 to 2.9.
The desktop and taskbar redraw even if fully occluded by a old style fullscreen context. This used to not be the case in older LWJGL 2 versions.
