My dumb*ss went and installed from here without looking into it first. It even links to this very github in it's "about" section, which I only investigated after reading the github description here.

I figure best case scenarios for me: it's the same author and they forgot to change the github description, it's just an alternative mod manager, or they're simply distributing it without permission. Worst case... I downloaded and installed a virus that can only be resolved with a full wipe. 💀

My excuse: I was tired and in a rush for dumb (and probably self-imposed) reasons at the time, so didn't check it as much as I should have (not at all) 😓
Edit: changed the title bc while it would be nice to know if the website is safe or not, I am mostly here to ask if anyone can confirm or deny its association with this github (LaughingLeader's)

This is the only official source for the BG3 Mod Manager. There is no "official website" beyond this repository.

It says that right at the TOP of this project's readme.

Forgive my initial reply if you saw that, basically the same thing just a bit more rude. I am regularly fluctuating in and out of "I'm at my limit and ready to break down, but I'm fine"

First... Ignoring modio since it's built into the game and needs no manager, the most popular platform that I'm aware of for bg3 mods is nexus. Any mod that mentions a manager, mentions this one and links either to this page or the nexus page for it that points here. You had to go way out of your way to reach that url.

Then, you have that message at the top of this repo's readme that you obviously read. It's clear and concise. It doesn't leave any ambiguous room for error. It plainly states that THIS is the only location you should get anything from. What more do you need to be said?

What you did run across, in the least shitty situation, is just a crypto miner that slurps up your cpu/gpu/memory tanking performance. You kill it, nuke it from orbit, and you're good. If you're unlucky, it's a keylogger and data miner that has slurped up your passwords/login sessions. After killing it and nuking any fragment of it from orbit, you need to go through and change EVERY password. It's imperative that you change those AFTER making sure there's absolutely nothing left from it. You also need to go to anything that maintains a login session and kill any of those that you aren't 100% certain are you(it's better to kill one that is you and log back in than leave any of theirs behind) as well as check for any additional logins that may have been added for anything that supports that.
