We could move the view away; or completely reposition the properties dock to a floating window, somewhere in the canvas; to actually have a live preview of the stroke changes.

I see the intention. Currently it is based on your preference. How should it work? Should it try to offset itself or should then decide for another corner?

Opening another corner can be very good; but it may be a little disturbing to switch left/right; especially for big screens/touchscreens.
I've thought of something like this:

Sooo we have it side by side of the bounding box. If there's no space in right side of bounding box then show it on the left side of it.
Also if the box is soo big that covers the canvas, then show it at a corner.

I tried out a bit and it feels strange somehow. You expect the property view on a specific part of the screen and its offsetted then. Additionally the padding is expected so you can use the resize on touch devices more easily
