Describe the Bug

#5368 breaks Steam controller support (and SteamInput) on Linux as the controllers are no longer recognized by Steam and therefore at best basic controller support without configuration options is available.

Any advanced features (like touchpad/gyro/etc. on DualSense) are no longer detected/available.

Expected Behavior

Like with Inputtino Controllers should get correctly identified by Steam and also show up in the Steam controller configuration to be configured. For controllers like DualSense advanced features (touchpad, gyro, etc.) should work with Steam as they did before.

@ReenigneArcher Steam BigPicture mode settings has an interface for controller configuration and testing that IMHO covers everything relevant.

Edit: Dualsense controllers dont even show up there with livrtualhid while working perfectly with inputtino.

@ReenigneArcher Also if I might make a suggestion: I'd if possible use inputtino as the implementation backend for libvirtualhid's linux parts (or base the linux parts on inputtino's code) as that already handles most caveats properly and is also properly maintained.

Linux controller handling can be finicky (e.g. DualSense and DualShock are using Sony's in-kernel driver for the controller for proper support of all features via uhid2), so a proven and maintained implementation (inputtino in this case) should IMHO be preferred to self-implementation if possible as that will massively reduce the maintenance burden onwards for proper controller support on Linux.

EDIT: I know inputtino is not emulating all possible devices but having the gamepad styles (Xbox, Nintendo, DualSense) it does provide is more than enough to properly attach any controller available on the marked with it's full feature set (either directly or via the next more powerful controller available without providing inputs on the missing feature of that one, e.g. DualShock on the Client works fully using DualSense on the Host but Adaptive Triggers are unavailable in that case). It's more important that what is available works correctly and does integrate with Linux controller implementation.

@ReenigneArcher IIRC you're also using CachyOS, so you might also have to do the following to get the full features out of a DualSense controller on Linux (best do this both on Host and Client if it is Linux):

• Install game-devices-udev Package from AUR via paru or shelly (or install the udev rules manually) so all features (and subdevices) of the DualSense controller get recognized properly. You'll have to reboot after doing either so the new rules get recognized.
• Disable the TouchPad pointer device that gets added for the DualSense Touch on your Desktop Environment (In Systemsettings for KDE) so it does not directly control the pointer and cause issues with Steam controller integration

Doing both should allow you to also use the DualSense Touchpad tracking and click test in Steam's Bigpicture mode properly.

Okay, I've done more debugging with libvirtualhid (rebuilt from the latest commit on master) and now everything suddenly started working. I've no real clue what is going on here but I'm glad the implementation is working as it should.

For those on CachyOS/Archlinux it might be necessary to have game-devices-udev from AUR installed, others might need the udev rules installed manually? I've (re)installed the package both on host and client during debugging so maybe that was the fix? The controller would show as something like "PS5 controller" not "Dualsense wireless controller" with default udev rules (without aforementioned package/udev rules). Is there any string matching somewhere that would cause this to be the fix?

The only minor cosmetic issue I'm having is that if the controller is connected via Bluetooth on the client it still shows up in Steams Controller settings as connected via USB but thats really just a non-issue as everything is functioning regardless now.

@ReenigneArcher I'm very sorry for all the noise today about libvirtualhid being broken on Linux! Seems like it just needs specific requirements to fully work for DualSense controllers there.

I've got it working in the end (somehow) but I'm still not sure as to why that is, so feel free to close this issue after you've read this.

Possibly but pacman did reload the device manager configuration in the post-install hooks so they should have been updated.
If it's just that issue it'll be a one-time thing for the switch and will never occur afterwards. Maybe just adding a note to reboot after upgrades when having controller issues to the troubleshooting guide will suffice in that case?

I've tried this on another of my systems and can confirm that at least for CachyOS/Archlinux upon first moonlight-qt connect my DualSense controller did not show up on the host's steam instance initially with libvirtualhid. Disconnecting/Reconnecting the controller while moonlight-qt was still connected to the host caused Steam to detect the controller there properly. This was done after upgrading to latest Sunshine from Lizardbyte's Repo this time, the system was also rebooted directly after the upgrade so any changed udev rules were sure to be loaded.

Also it seems that installing udev rules from/via game-devices-udev can help with the initial detection upon connection issue.

Update: I'm (so far) unable to reproduce this after the first controller was properly detected by Steam

@ReenigneArcher This has been nagging me and the main difference that I'm seeing is that libvirtualhid emulates DualSense as a Device connected via USB (regardless of how it's connected to the client it shows as "DualShock - USB" in Steams controller settings) while inputtino emulates it intentionally via Bluetooth connection (showing up as "Dualshock - Bluetooth" in Steams controller settings) due to some additional checks for USB devices that might cause detection in hidraw/SDL to fail (details are described here as linked earlier).

So the fix here might be to always intentionally emulate Dualsense (and likely Dualshock4 devices as they use the same kernel driver) as connected via Bluetooth on the Host. Functionality-wise there won't be any difference between the two connection types as both have the full feature-set. This should avoid any connection problems due to additional checks (parent USB devices, etc.) when emulating a connection via USB. Would that be a suitable fix for you?

Another thing I've noticed with libvirtualhid is that the DualSense gyro is not working properly (another regression from inputtino where this is working perfectly). On the steam gyro calibration feature it almost looks like the gyro axis are switched and therefore not even the calibration can be done as noise levels cannot be properly detected, making that a good way to test.

Not sure if this can also be credited to the USB vs. Bluetooth connection difference but it's a possibility.

Note: To have full support and see all features on Steam's configuration for controller gyro game-devices-udev was necessary once again (on Cachy).
