Grow text box height with content

Surveys occasionally solicit longer free-form text entries. We currently maintain a fixed height for the text field, which is not a terrific experience for entering a short paragraph of text. Can we grow the height of the text entry field as the user adds more content?

If we use a textarea element for the jQuery Mobile textinput widget, then it autogrows by default:
