What about HDMI audio?(+)

There is no HDMI audio after applying this guide to the clean PM9/Win11 installation on N100. Is it possible to fix that?
It was definitely working for PM8/Win11 earlier somehow (to my regret my host's exact settings was lost with failed SSD).

For N100 it works for i440fx with loaded vfio_pci and bound device ID to vfio-pci.

Is is to load vfio_pci via /etc/modules:
nano /etc/modules and add vfio_pci
Then update-grub && update-initramfs -u && reboot

Bind device ID via /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf:
nano /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf and add options vfio-pci ids=8086:54c8
Reboot

Finally, add the device to the VM in the config (100.conf in my case):
hostpci1: 00:1f.3

By doing this I get error 28 in Windows Device Manager and cannot install the driver neither via Device Manager not Windows Update. Any clue?

I have good news - you don't need to configure vfio.conf for the audio passthrough on N100! There's a much simpler method.

Simple Audio Passthrough Solution

The audio controller can be passed through directly without vfio-pci binding. Here's how:

Method 1: Using Proxmox Web UI (Recommended)

1. Go to your VM → Hardware → Click Add → PCI Device
2. Select Raw Device
3. Choose 0000:00:1f.3 (Alder Lake-N PCH High Definition Audio Controller)
4. Click Add
5. Reboot the VM

Method 2: Using Command Line

qm set [VMID] --hostpci1 0000:00:1f.3

Replace [VMID] with your VM ID. We use hostpci1 because hostpci0 is already used for the iGPU.

Important Notes

• No need to modify /etc/modules - don't add vfio_pci
• No need to modify /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf - keep it empty
• No need to update GRUB or initramfs
• This works the same way as the iGPU passthrough - simple and clean

After rebooting the VM, Windows should automatically detect and install the Intel audio driver. You should then have HDMI audio output.

@eherranzr The Error 28 you encountered was likely caused by the vfio-pci binding conflict. Try removing those configurations first:

1. Remove vfio_pci from /etc/modules
2. Remove or comment out the line in /etc/modprobe.d/vfio.conf
3. Run update-initramfs -u && reboot on the host
4. Then follow the simple method above

Hi! For Beelink Sei12 I5-1235U works fine the HDMI output, but no sound :( .
I tried attached the PCI Device "Alder Lake Audio Definicion High Controller "but only work by Audio jack output not HDMI.

Any suggestions?

Try everything you can: blacklist audio driver modules, bind the audio controller to VFIO early using /etc/modprobe/vfio.conf, and experiment with all possible combinations. It takes time, but who know you might get lucky.

I tried some test without success, but now I solved (as workaround) it using a USB Bluetooth passthru and connect it to a external usb audio, like google nest audio. In my use case, it's was for running batocera gamming platform on my Beelink (home labs mini PC). Thanks!

I managed to get HDMI Audio working on an i5 8500T (Coffee Lake) by doing the following:

1. I used the UPT-Mode with the Universal_noGOP_igd.rom to configure the iGPU in Proxmox.
2. My device (Lenovo M920Q Tiny) has its audio controller in a different IOMMU group (0000:00:1f). I passed through this group and set the same "romfile=igd.rom" parameter as for the gpu.

With this configuration, Batocera can use the iGPU for video and also output audio through HDMI.

The resulting additions to the .conf are:

hostpci0: 0000:00:02,romfile=igd.rom

hostpci0 is the iGPU and hostpci1 the Intel Corporation Cannon Lake PCH cAVS [8086:a348] (rev 10) device. Keep in mind that, depending on the specific system, additional devices may have the same IOMMU group and it could break something.
