Why are you requiring/collecting payment information for the Community license?

To clarify, you don't need a license key for non-production/evaluation use. It's only if you're putting your software into a commercial production scenario and qualify for the Community license. In that vein it's similar to other tools/products (Azure, Visual Studio, Rider, etc.). It's required for verification/audit purposes at that point.

Visual Studio and Rider do not require payment information to use the non-commercial version.

I understand it's quite confusing to have to enter a credit card for a free subscription. I'm not Microsoft or JetBrains, who have a lot of custom infrastructure to manage their subscriptions. Paddle, the merchant of record, manages subscriptions, payments, renewals, refunds, cancellations, taxes, fees, etc so I'm a bit limited to what they support.

They have a concept of a "free trial" which is not this idea. But I'll look into it!

OK I figured it out! I can't create a "subscription" in Paddle without payments, so a Community license can't be "subscribed" to and must be re-acquired every 12 months.

That means, if I want to use MediatR 13.0.0 then I need to pay? But if I want to use 12.5.0 then no payment is needed?

Version 13.0.0 is the dual-licensed version, which has both a FOSS license and commercial license. The commercial license has a free "Community" edition that applies for individuals, non-profits, non-commercial/educational use etc.

If "I" here is you as an individual - then no, that would be the community license. If "I" here is "I work at a company that makes over $5M USD in annual revenue" - well, still no, you don't have to pay for a license, your company/employer would need to.

Version 12.5.0 is released under the previous OSS license, Apache. AutoMapper went through a couple licensing changes over the years so it's whatever the license was at the time.

Yes, there's just now a CLA in place. Which honestly every OSS project should have.

I'd love to see a blog or discussion around future ideas for Mediatr.

I'm in a situation where (like many I suspect) my company is monitoring and waiting to see what makes sense for us. For the time being, we're on the most recent free version. We're not against paying for a license, but there needs to be incentive when the alternative is free (either old version or one of the forks that will likely pop up). That incentive in some projects comes as things like security updates or significant new features, etc, though Mediatr at it's core has seemed (to me, I haven't followed the project) pretty stable for years. I think in your first post about it you mentioned new feature work that could be done, but I'd love to see a peek into ideas that you have for the future that would help organizations in our situation decide if it makes sense to stay around and wait for these updates (and then buy the commercial license), or decide if we're fine to stay on the existing version (or a fork).

Oh of course! I plan on blogging about that next week (as well as putting out polls for desired features too). For now the big change is aligning with Microsoft's .NET support. Both AutoMapper and MediatR weren't even attempting to do so before. MediatR was still on .NET 6 for example.

My library has a dependency on MediatR and I'm under the threshold allowing me to use free commercial license. Do consumers of my library need to license?

Yes, those consumers would be subject to the terms of the license.

How long will version 12 receive security updates?

Versions 12 and before have the same support as they did before this change - that is, none. I didn't provide any guarantees of bug fixes, security fixes, support or anything. Version 13 and later are the ones with official support.
