Outreachy FAQ
Frequently asked questions for Outreachy with MDAnalysis. Please read our general Outreachy page and Outreachy's applicant guide.
Questions have been broadly grouped into related categories. More will be added as we encounter them.
Communication regarding Outreachy is carried out publicly on the developer mailing list: https://groups.google.com/g/mdnalysis-devel. The email address is mdnalysis-devel@googlegroups.com.
Note
- Initial emails are screened by moderators so first posting will only happen after a delay of a few hours.
- All replies go to the mailing list and not your private email address.
- Read the email replies through the public web interface https://groups.google.com/g/mdnalysis-devel or subscribe to mdnalysis-devel to get the emails.
- Please do not email other developers/mentors privately, we prefer that communication be done publicly.
We also have a discord; sign up with https://discord.gg/fXTSfDJyxE. This discord is there to supplement, but not replace, the mailing list. You can ask questions on the discord, but try to keep any formal discussions on the mailing list.
No - we prefer that communication remain public, either on the discord or our mailing list.
There are exceptions – if you feel you have been harassed or witnessed harassment within the community, you may reach out privately. Our Code of Conduct has more information if you want to contact us confidentially.
We love a casual and relaxed vibe at MDAnalysis, and refer to each other by first name or any chosen handle – no need to use titles or honorifics (e.g. madam/sir/etc).
We have a number of easy issues you can work on issue trackers for both the core repository and the user guide. Read through our guide for contributing, and feel free to ask any questions.
No - if you want to work on an issue then submit a PR that references the issue. We will prioritize work over intent, i.e., we will typically only review the first PR that addresses a issue and ignore any other PRs that have been submitted after the first one; we will (and other applicants should) ignore issue comments along the lines of "I will work on this".
This means that you don't need to announce that you will work on an issue. Please ask questions if you need to know details to get started but ultimately, showing your work counts.
If a PR has been submitted and no progress has been made after four days, we may close the PR as stale. Similarly, if we post questions or comments in the PR comments and do not get a response in four days, we may consider the PR to be abandoned and close it.
No - at this stage, we ask you have no more than one PR open at a time. This is to try ensure an equitable distribution of issues for all applicants. Once your PR has been approved and merged, you may then work on another issue.
