Essentia Meter Algorithm

In the Essentia Documentation there is an algorithm for calculating meter, but it's documentation says "Experimental Do not use".  I'm trying to develop an algorithm to detect meter using Essentia and I would like to know more about the Meter Algorithms (e.g. what experiments have been done, what were the results ...).  Does anyone know of any papers with information?
